Overview

About the HealthCurrent Project:

The State of Michigan has committed to facilitating interoperable health information exchange since 2006. Public Act 137 of 2006 created the Michigan Health Information Technology (HIT) Commission and, in late 2006, over 200 stakeholders were convened under the MiHIN Conduit to Care project and resulting report. The Conduit to Care report (available here) outlines the State of Michigan's dedication to an incremental approach to HIE implementation - starting with establishing multiple regional health information organizations (RHIOs) and then connecting them in the future. This incremental approach is focused on the development of regional health information exchange in nine Medical Trading Areas (MTA) throughout Michigan. Supporting this effort, in June 2007 the state awarded $4.5 million in grants to promote health information technology exchange, including HIE planning and implementation grants to seven of the nine MTA's.

In August 2008 the state awarded an additional $1.2 million in additional grants to the two final MTAs, including $674,474 awarded to Altarum Institute for planning activities in the South Central Michigan region (Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston and Washtenaw counties) - the HealthCurrent project.

About Altarum Institute:

Altarum is a Washtenaw County based Michigan nonprofit 501 (C) (3) research institute positioning to become the nation's preeminent provider of objective health systems research and solutions. Through the implementation and monitoring of state public health information systems, support of Federal health informatics activities and the facilitation of the Southeast Michigan Health Information Exchange (SEMHIE), the Altarum Institute has a long history of supporting the development of health information technology. Altarum and our committed stakeholders look forward to the opportunity of continuing this work through planning a regional health information exchange organization in South Central Michigan.
